Auckland Council is proposing a massive change to the funding formula for local boards, and the Kaipātiki Local Board and Devonport-Takapuna Local Board will lose millions of dollars each year for 10 years. It is ironically called “Fairer Funding”, but will actually mean millions diverted from the North Shore into other parts of Auckland. This at the same time that rates go up…

What will this cut mean? The actual amount needed to maintain and renew existing assets is being removed from the funding formula. This means that we won’t have enough money to maintain or replace all of our leisure centres, libraries, community buildings, playgrounds, sports fields, bush tracks, etc. We will instead have to ‘sweat the assets’ and when we can’t do that anymore, we may have to close or demolish them so other boards can build them in their areas.

The Kaipātiki Local Board has outright opposed this “Hunger Games” proposal. We believe that while other areas could do with greater investment, the North Shore should not be defunded and asset-stripped to achieve it.

The “Fairer Funding” model will mean real cuts to the things that matter to our community under both the “Central” and “Pay less, get less” scenarios. Under the “Pay more, get more” scenario, there will be a cut in year 1, but then an increase over time.

If you need to, you can support one of the scenarios but with changes.
