Auckland Council is now consulting on the Draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan, which includes a change from weekly to fortnightly for your general rubbish bins (no change to recycling or food scrap collections). If this is supported, it will begin in 2026.

It has already been decided that the tag system will be replaced with a rates charge like in other parts of Auckland. But I am concerned about this proposal to halve our rubbish collections. Yes many people already do minimise their waste and only put out their rubbish monthly or less frequently, but I’m concerned that for larger families this will make things more difficult, especially if a collection is missed and the rubbish sits there for up to 4 weeks. Households with standard size bins will be able to order a larger bin, but there will be a $40 charge plus an increase in rates. I just hope that we don’t see an increase in dumping (especially with less public rubbish bins around Auckland).
